The SLS Council

About the SLS Council

The School Library System Council is an official advisory board that recommends policy, reviews the budget, creates and monitors that SLS Plan of Service, and evaluates SLS services as per ยง90.18. The Council meets four times a year in the afternoons of Communication Coordinator meetings. Members include librarians and representatives from other groups including administrators, technology coordinators, academic libraries, and public libraries.

Council Minutes

The School Library System Council meets at noon during regularly scheduled Communication Coordinator Meetings.

Chris welcomed everyone to the SSL conference. Thank you to the Council for providing funding that allowed 30 member librarians to attend.

IMLS funding is at risk, unclear what the impact will be to NY libraries, but likely most focused on the state library.

The Annual Report was presented for review by the Council. Council approved submission of the report.

GVBOCES SLS has 31 librarians attending SSL (registration capped at 350) as funded by the SLS.

The School Library Systems of the Rochester region are supporting the cost of some of the keynotes at SSL. Each SLS is looking to fund at $2,000. Passed by Council.

The Annual Report was discussed. DLD is having some issues with the site so we are waiting to complete when things are stable.

Budget is looking good for next year with modest increases in the CoSers that give us a bit more leeway in SLS budget.

SLS is proposing being a vendor at the SSL Conference to showcase Digies, the AI Scope and Sequence, and Library.FYI resources. Proposed by Chris to spend $1,500 on vendor booth. Passed by Council.

The SSL Conference is in Rochester in May, 2025. Chris would like to use SLS and other funds to make it possible for librarians to attend. SLS would cover regular registration, but not travel or hotel. Passed by Council.

Chris proposed supporting the 90 Second Newbery Festival as a sponsor at the $500 level. Passed by Council.

Special Needs Client Population for the year is native and indigenous peoples. There will be a presentation on this population at the December Communication Coordinators meeting.

LibraryReady.AI work is progressing. Chris will meet with the advisory board in June following the state SLS meeting to begin drafting the curriculum documentation.

Chris will be leading an AI session for SLSA and working on a followup project to explore creation of a possible curriculum resource for librarians teaching AI in NY. AI was major discussion topic at the SLJ Summit in Atlanta last week.
